THE YEARS' EVENTS - 1937, Page Two

Summer Term.

April 13th.
As we are to have a full week's holiday for the - Coronation, our Summer Term commenced earlier than usual this year. There was a lovely surprise waiting for us on our return, in the shape of a Ping-Pong Table. We were overjoyed at the sight of it, and we hope that our appreciation of this splendid gift has been adequately expressed in our feverish competition to " bag " the table!

April 20th.
We were very much interested in the Lecture and Demonstration which was given to-day by Mr. Daimtree, on the subject of " Life-Saving."

April 23rd.
We are not often back at School for St. George's Day - but this year we were lucky in being here to celebrate the feast of our English patron. For the second time this year, the Irish and English teams met one another - victory again going to the English. Congratulations! After the match, Father Gaffney gave us a Lantern Lecture on the missionary work done in Africa by " the White Fathers."

To-day the result of the " Shakespeare Competition " was announced. During the holidays, we were kept busy trying to find how many words we could make out of the name " William Shakespeare." Out of twenty-one entries, Dorothy Collier came first with 849 words, and Therese Walter second with 819.

April 29th.
This evening the Boarders had the pleasure of conveying their good wishes to Mother McEvoy, whose feast we are celebrating to-morrow - we have a big surprise in store for her.

April 30th.
We don't think the Secret could have been kept much longer. There have been very mysterious " goings on " since the beginning of the term. Each form has secretly been getting up a Play, or some other Concert item, to be presented on Mother McEvoy's feast. We do hope she enjoyed our performance to-day, and that it really was a surprise!

May 5th.
We were glad to welcome Reverend Mother General back again, and to know that her stay is going to be longer than usual this time.

May 11th.
To-day we broke up for Coronation week. Before the break-up, we were treated by IV A to a very fine performance of a French Play, entitled " L'Avocat Patelin." In true Coronation spirit, we sang a hearty " God Save the King," before dispersing. Although we envied the Londoners, those of us who stayed behind had their fair share of excitement.

We had already been allowed to help with the making of the decoration, and to-day was spent putting the finishing touches to an elaborate scheme of decoration, according to directions given us on a large scale plan of the Convent, on which every decoration was clearly marked.

May 12th.
We were glad to be able to follow the whole of the Coronation Procession and Ceremony on the wireless. Indeed, the greater part of the day was spent " listening-in." The speech of our newly crowned sovereign brought to a close a day of happy events.

May 18th.

Back to work again - after a very exciting week. We shall have to keep hard at study from now on, as the distance between ourselves and School Certificate is becoming very short.

May 19th.
Mother McEvoy announced to-day that Reverend Mother, Mother Kelly and herself were going to be away in Ireland a short time. Although we are glad that they are having the holiday, we shall miss them very much and will be counting the days until they return.

May 30th.
To-day we enjoyed the customary privilege of having the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction in the Convent grounds.

June 1st and 2nd.
These two days were very busy. The examinations of the Royal Drawing Society were taking place, and within a week we are to have the examinations of the Royal Society of Art Masters.

June 4th.
To-day we kept the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The entire School assembled as usual for the Act of Consecration.

June 5th.
We had permission to go into Bournemouth to watch the Tennis Match at Dean Court between Perry and Vines. It was a very big treat for us - especially as our Tennis enthusiasm was at its height, owing to the approaching Inter-Schools Tennis Tournament, in which we are to take part next week.

June 12th.
We played a Tennis Match against Wentworth School. Many of us went to watch the match and felt very proud when the Convent proved to be the winners.

June 17th.
We had the privilege of a day's Recollection, conducted by Father Barrett, S. J.

June 19th.
We were disappointed that we had to have our outing this year without our Mistress-General. However, nothing was left undone to make the day thoroughly happy. Salisbury was the chosen spot this year. We had a picnic lunch at Old Sarum and made the most of the fresh air and open country. Later in the afternoon, we were driven back to the town to explore the Cathedral, and this we did very thoroughly.

After tea, which we had at the Cafe Rendez-vous, we set off to explore the old town. The greatest attraction for most of us was the Market Square, where to-day a market was being held. We had a very happy day.

June 22nd.
A foretaste of worse to come: the Seniors had to face their French Oral to-day.

June 23rd.
We were delighted to welcome Reverend Mother, Mother Kelly and Mother McEvoy, who returned to Boscombe. to-day.

June 24th.
We very much enjoyed the entertainment given to-day by the Boys. The principal item was a play entitled " The Union Jack."

June 28th.

The Bournemouth Festival is being held this week. To-day several of us brought home certificates.

July 3rd.
Our Tennis Couples took part in the Inter-Schools Tennis Tournament.

July 9th.
The Music and Singing Examinations were held to-day. We always enjoy the Singing Examination, but the individual ordeal in Music is rather nerve-racking!

July 10th.
The terminal tests began to-day, so we are in for a strenuous week. The first of the Inter-Form Rounders Matches was played between V A and III B. The latter played a very plucky game against such an unequal opponent, and we were sorry to see them beaten.

July 12th.
The Oxford Locals-Higher Certificate, School Certificate and Junior Oxford, began to-day. We had a larger number at our centre this year, which necessitated using the Gym. as an Examination Room.

July 13th.
More Rounders: IV A played IV B; the latter were the winning team.

July 14th.
To-day brought the excitement of the Final of the Inter-Form Rounders: V A against IV B. V A won and so will carry off the Cup.

July 21st.
The Inter-Form Tennis Tournament was played to-day. The Victory went to Kerryton.

July 22nd.
This year the Senior Distribution of Prizes and Certificates was separate from the juniors. At intervals during the Distribution, the music and elocution pupils gave us the benefit of the term's work. Reverend Mother gave us a short address, and when we had sung the School Song we dispersed.

Immediately, the " Goodbyes " began. Some who had to say " Goodbye " for the last time were less eager than those who were merely about to refresh themselves with nine weeks' holiday.
