Boys Preparatory School - 1938, Page two

Our photo shows the Corpus Christi Procession, 1938

Saint Aloysius being our special Patron, we had our Annual Outing on his Feast. As we have the honour of singing in the choir on that day, we chose the " Salve Regina," two verses of the " Lauda Sion," as it was the octave of Corpus Christi, and the " Ave Verum." Then with all our hearts we sang the hymn to St. Aloysius.

Soon after breakfast the coaches arrived; and, when we had sung our hymn to the Guardian Angels, each boy picked up a carrier-bag, with his name marked on in large letters, containing his lunch and a bottle of lemonade for his thirsty expedition into the heart of the country.

We divided up into parties and dashed for the coaches, only too glad to be of leaving lessons behind.

We all enjoyed the drive, and the morning was spent exploring woods, tracking the enemy and tree-climbing, the lunch whistle sounding all too soon.

We had tea and bought sweets and ices in a country tea-garden, which had been warned beforehand of the coming raid. In the evening we played hide-and-seek in the woods, and everyone was very sorry when it was time to go home.

The Lottery in aid of the C.D.F. came at last, and as we had been told to save our pennies for that day, we went to the Playroom with jingling pockets carrying our entrance tickets. A great surprise met our eyes, for toys, books and games were spread out on the tables, and we had to look for the thing which had our ticket number pinned on. There was great excitement, and everyone seemed very pleased with his Lot.

This year as well as saving pennies for the " Holy Childhood," we also collected for the Orphans of the Diocese. We had a picture of a large house for which we bought 1d. bricks, and we were allowed to chalk them on the house ourselves.

We soon managed to finish the building with the help of the boys in the Baby Class, who seem to be the best at saving pennies. We also bought tickets for a Concert given by the Junior Girls in aid of the Missions.

At Christmas we acted an Operetta called " A Topsy-Turvy Christmas." The story was about some boys who were spending Xmas with their Grandma and who were turned topsy-turvy by the little Elves because their curiosity led them to turn the house upside down in their search for Christmas presents, much to the annoyance of the maids and cooks who showed their disapproval in a comic song.

As a reward, Reverend Mother gave us an Actors' Tea Party in our Playroom. Each group in the Play had its own table in the centre of which we had put a figure representing the character of our group. A large Cat with a huge bow on its neck for the Cat Boys, a Cook brandishing a wooden ladle for the Maids and Cooks, and a very Topsy-Turvy Boy on another table. The Toys and the little Elves also had little tables to themselves.

On her Feast we had our annual procession in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes, to thank her far keeping us free from sickness again this year. Carrying candles and saying the Rosary, we made a tour of the Grotto where we sang the Lourdes Hymn.

We kept Reverend Mother's Feast on March 17th with a Fancy Dress Party. Before the Grand Parade, presentations were made to her and flowers offered. We then gave a Display of Country Dancing, followed by Figure Marching; each Form showing its best work.

A boy in Irish costume danced a jig, after which all joined in Sir Roger; and then the Babies did a special march and dance. After this it was tea time, and we went to our Study Hall which had been transformed into a grand tea-room where we soon made cakes, lemonade and jellies vanish.

The evening was spent in playing games and dancing, and we finished up our St. Patrick's Day Party with a jolly balloon battle followed by refreshments.
