Owing to wet weather we had almost given up hope of having our Annual Sports. The first possible day was hurriedly fixed and without the usual flags and decorations, the races were run off. As we had practised longer than usual, things went with a swing and we did enjoy ourselves - especially at the ices and lemonade.
The running was particularly good this year and N, Murnane was cheered to the echo when he cleared loft. tins. in the " under nines " Long Jump. Reverend Mother presented the Prizes to the following winners:-

On the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes we had a bigger Procession than usual as it was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the building of the Grotto in our garden. Father G. Turner, S. J. presided, and standing with lighted candles we sang the Lourdes Hymn.
While we were at the Grotto Father Turner asked us to pray very specially for one of our Old Boys who was in hospital having an operation just at that time. We were very sorry to hear a few days later than Sean Farrelly had died. R.I.P.

We had a rather unusual Christmas Play this year, called the " Youngest Shepherd." The story was as follows: A young shepherd boy, Isaac (P. Howard-Garner) comes to the Stable at Bethlehem on Christmas night and Our Lady (B. Greensmith) surrounded by small boy angels, lets him hold the Holy Babe for a minute.
He goes away fired with love for Our Lord, and the next scene shows him as a young man telling of the Divine Master and working miracles in His Name. He heals a sick child and is betrayed by a spying servant of the household (cleverly acted by I. Vokes) to the High Priest.
The following scene shows the trial before the High Priest (J. Burke-Gaffney). Isaac is condemned to be stoned and is led away bound, having bravely confessed his belief in the Messiah.
Just before Christmas we had a Lottery in aid of the 'Holy Childhood.' Each boy bought a ticket, and Father Xmas presented the prizes to the boys, who had to climb the snowy slopes to get them. The Babies squealed with delight when they got lovely cuddly squirrels, rabbits and ducks, and each boy seemed to get just what he wanted.
Reverend Mother had given some crackers which had been hung from streamers all across the room. We had great fun pulling them down.
The bigger boys acted a short play about William Caxton, the first printer. There were several Percussion Band pieces and the Babies played Nursery Rhymes and sang songs which amused us all. Different groups then chose their favourite song and some were even brave enough to sing solos; and by the time 'God Save the King' was reached, every boy had done his bit.

On Reverend Mother's Feast we had a Fancy Dress Party and all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
The General Parade started and then we had Figure Marching and Folk Dancing, and we all danced 'The Chestnut Tree,' even the Babies joining in,
The day of days - our Annual Outing - was a great success. We went to the New Forest and woke up the sleepy village of Burley raiding the shops for lemonade, ices and cherry-cider to help us on our way back to Headquarters where our picnic lunch was being prepared. As we were treking through the Forest we saw some Army huts being erected for the soldiers' camps later in the summer.
Our Summer Play was to have been in our garden around the great oak tree and we had the practices there; but the weather decided otherwise, for at the last minute it poured with rain and we had to move into the Gym. Our play was called " Faith of our Fathers," and traced the faith from Pagan times to our own day.
It opened with a Pagan dance by the Babies accompanied off stage by Form II Percussion Band. We thought the small boys looked jolly nice in their short coloured tunics and they danced awfully well. One small three-year-old seemed very unwilling to leave the stage at the end of their dance.
