June.
These were sad days. Reports of the war became daily more alarming until at length we heard the sad news that after a gallant resistance our ally France had been forced to capitulate in face of the violence of the German onslaught.
We have prayed for this brave nation which fought so bravely and is now suffering so intensely, and we look forward to the day when France shall be restored once more to the position due to her as First Daughter of the Church and Mother of so many Saints.
The gravity of the situation could no longer be concealed, and the possibility of an invasion of England was openly discussed. Many of our companions moved to places further inland, where their parents felt that the danger would be less.
His Eminence, Cardinal Hinsley, ordered a special week of Prayer and Penance to be offered for the safety of our country. We were pleased to make our little sacrifices in this great cause, and the Boarders attended Holy Hour each evening at Corpus Christi Church.
July.
Just before the end of term, a Garden Party was arranged to raise funds for the Red Cross. The proceeds exceeded our highest hopes, for we were able to hand over £10 10s. 0d. as our contribution to this good work.
It was impossible to hold a formal Prize-giving this year, and as we said good-bye at the end of term, I think many of us wondered whether there would be a " next term."
September.
How good God has been to us! It was found possible to reopen at the appointed time, but we found that many changes had taken place. The Juniors were to have class in the Convent to obviate the difficulty of crossing from St. Joseph's in case of Airraids, while to make room for the little ones, three Senior forms had been installed in Liesse.
To enable us to leave school earlier in the afternoon, the time-table was altered. A shortened lunch hour made it possible to have an extra lesson early in the afternoon. Day pupils now bring their lunch, and they seem to enjoy the change and especially the possibility of joining in some good team games before classes begin.
We were told that our dear Bishop would be pleased for us to help in the work of providing clothes for the Channel Islands Refugees. Everyone set to work with a will, and we were ready with our knitting whenever the Sirens disturbed us during recreation.
October.
A real children's programme! We listened with great delight to the first Broadcast speech of our dear Princess Elizabeth as she addressed the children of the Empire.
On October 25th, Reverend Mother told us of the sudden death, on the previous evening, of our beloved Bishop Cotter. R.I.P. We attended the Requiem Mass which was offered in Corpus Christi Church on the day of his burial, and also the Requiem which was sung in our own chapel two days later.
November.
During this month we tried to be particularly fervent in our prayers and acts for the Holy Souls, as we thought of the thousands who are passing into eternity during this dreadful war.
Interest in our Houses has been greatly increased, as extra good marks are now offered for Work, Conduct, Games and Support of School Activities. Ignatians and Xaverians are most keen, and so far marks are very evenly distributed.
December.
We hear rumours of a Raffle on December 3rd, so we suspect the Xaverians are organisers. The proceeds are to help to provide a Christmas party for the soldiers. All contributions will be gratefully received by Miss Hughes, who is devoting herself so zealously to work at the Canteen, assisted by Danielle Chappon and other members of the Staff.
When the Magazine is published, Christmas will be near. Thousands of children in countries of Europe will be homeless and starving this year - and how many good things we still enjoy! Our dear Lord has indeed blessed and cared for us. Let us in gratitude be generous, seeking less for ourselves and striving to do more for others, especially for those who suffer.
Kneeling at the Crib, let us ask many graces for ourselves and others, from the Divine Infant who has come to save the world. Love brings Him to the manger and the altar, and He yearns for our love in return.
May He be King in our hearts and set His seal upon everything we do.
