September.
At the opening of the new School Year, we welcomed Miss Flynn in the Middle Forms and Miss Peacock who is to be responsible for Gym and Games, replacing Miss Collins who left us to be married at the close of the Summer term.
Still more improvements were visible in the Senior School. Newly painted bright corridors make such a pleasant atmosphere. We thank Reverend Mother for all she has done in the improvement of our department, especially by having a new Cloakroom built.
Father Baron, S.J., our Parish Priest, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Ghost to ask God's blessing on the School Year. He spoke to us of our need of the Holy Spirit to assist us in all we do and to make all our work and play pleasing to God.
On Sunday, September 24th, we attended the Bournemouth celebrations in honour of the Centenary of the Restoration of the Hierarchy. The ceremony took place in the grounds of St. Peter's School and the assembly was impressive despite the fact that heavy rain necessitated shortening of the proceedings.
Pontifical Benediction was given by Bishop King of Portsmouth, while a rousing sermon was preached by Bishop Grimshaw of Plymouth. We began to realise in some small way the advantages we enjoy and the astonishing progress made in this area during the past century. Perhaps not all of our pupils realise that very soon after this period of Restoration, to be exact, in April 1871, the Religious of the Cross first came to Boscombe, which was then in the Diocese of Southwark.
October.
On October 4th, a party attended a performance of 'Le Barbier de Seville' at Bournemouth School. These who are now members of the Cercle Francais of Bournemouth, found the play much more easy to follow than their companions, but everyone gained much enjoyment from the production.
A Conference organised by the Council for Education in World Citizenship, was held at Talbot Heath. The discussions were centred on World Food problems. Four members of the Sixth Form were permitted to attend, and Miss Cummings kindly accompanied them. Everything possible had been done by the
Staff of Talbot Heath to make the day as interesting and enjoyable as it proved to be.
The Winter Gardens Concerts for Schools have been resumed, and the group selected to attend find them a great help and pleasure.
November
All Saints' Day is memorable this year on account of the Definition of the Doctrine of the Assumption of Our Blessed Lady. We united in spirit with the ceremonies in Rome and sang the `Assumpta Est' at Mass and Benediction. All the Boarders were in time to hear the beginning of the Broadcast of the ceremony, and we listened until the end of the Papal Mass.
This Holy Year has provided so many incentives to increased devotion, and one very dear to us is the Canonisation of Saint Maria Goretti. To encourage us to pray often to her, as so fitting a model for young girls of to-day, Reverend Mother has given a picture of the Saint which is now hanging in the Senior School.
To turn to more mundane events. The Annual School Dance was held at the Pavilion, Bournemouth, on November 19th. The Deputy Mayor and Mayoress presided, and Reverend Mother was pleased to welcome members of the Clergy from the various parishes and also a large number of parents and Past Pupils.
On November 21st Sister Mechtilde celebrated her Silver Jubilee. All those who have met her as Portress will wish to join in offering congratulations to her. Ad multos annos.
The following day, Feast of St. Cecilia, was the date of Reverend Mother Kelly's Jubilee. To the great joy of Nuns and pupils, Reverend Mother General was able to come to Boscombe for the occasion. Motets were sung at the Community Mass by the Choir of Senior girls who had been trained by Mother Pannell and Miss Gobell.
They all considered themselves privileged to have this opportunity of sharing in the spiritual celebrations marking this day. After Mass, the Kiss of Peace was given, and as the Community left the Chapel, the Boarders were lining the corridors, carrying gold streamers and flowers and offering their wishes to Reverend Mother Kelly.
Votive Mass of Our Lady was sung by Father Baron, S.J., at 9.30. Special permission was given for this Mass to be said, and again the Choir was responsible for the singing of the Proper and principal parts of the Mass.
Reverend Mother Kelly's relatives were present, and at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the afternoon, Father Weaver wore the magnificent Benediction Cope presented by them in honour of the jubilee. We were pleased to see Reverend Mother d'Alanrcon and Mother Soehle at Boscombe for this occasion. Everyone regretted that illness prevented Reverend Mother Butler-Bowdon from attending.
We renew our congratulations to Reverend Mother Kelly and ask her prayers, for we know that her interest in the welfare of Boscombe's children is as active as ever.
Father Dennis, S.J., recently appointed Superior at the Sacred Heart Church, Bournemouth, came to visit the School and has promised that we shall see him again soon.
December.
It is time to go to print, so the rest of the news must be in anticipation. The Carol Singing in the Chapel has been fixed for December 17th, and we have heard a rumour that Mr. Elgar (Cecilia's father) will take a recording.
Form IV are busy practising the Nativity Play which they hope to produce before the whole School when we assemble on the last day of term to offer our Christmas wishes to Reverend Mother.
So a Happy Christmas to all and let us ask the Infant Jesus, King of Peace, to bless the coming year with the Peace He came to bring.
