APRIL

Not very much to report as we were on holiday for most of the time. On April 30th the "Osiris" Repertory Company gave a performance of "Macbeth" for us. The stage effects and acting were very good and we came away with a much better understanding of the play. The contrasts of character were brought out vividly in the acting and we would never have believed that women took the men's parts. This is indeed a tribute to the acting.

MAY

May 3rd. Feast of the Cross. Mass was again celebrated in the Hall this year by Father Baron, S. J., and in the afternoon we had Benediction, after which Father Weaver, the Convent Chaplain gave us the relic of the True Cross to kiss.

May 5th. Many friends and nearly all present pupils gathered in the Hall for the Past Pupils' Entertainment, which consisted of two plays. Those who had thoroughly enjoyed their former production expected something really good and they were not disappointed, although the plays this time, were of a completely different style. We say "Well done" and "Let us have another before long, please".

The following week, the Bournemouth Shakespearean Company performed "Othello" in the School Assembly Hall. Mrs. Yates-Fish made the offer on behalf of the Company and we were very pleased to accept it. "Othello" is a tragedy with which we are less familiar than most of the other Shakespearean plays, so the opportunity of seeing it performed was doubly welcome. Our thanks are extended to the Company.

May 12th was a special day in the Convent. Sister Agnes celebrated her Diamond jubilee and we were most impressed to see her in the Chapel so happy to receive the Kiss of Peace from all the other Nuns. Sister was afterwards wheeled down the Corridor, for she had for some time found great difficulty in walking. The Boarders lined the Corridor and clapped her on her way. The event made a deep impression on all of us, as we thought of the long years that Sister Agnes had been working for Our Blessed Lord and how interested she still was in everything happening in the Convent and School.

On the Feast of Corpus Christi, a group of juniors made their First Holy Communion in the Convent Chapel. The Senior Choir again sang the Mass at Corpus Christi Church. This year we sang the Kindermesse, with "Ave Maria" as the Offertory Motet, since the Feast of Corpus Christi fell on May 31st, Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

JUNE

As our last relaxation before Examinations we enjoyed the Film "Pickwick Papers", in which the vicissitudes of that immortal hero are so vividly shown.

The out-door Corpus Christi Procession was possible this year. Father Baron preached the sermon in the Presbytery grounds, and after Benediction there, the procession proceeded into the Convent garden, where a a beautiful altar bad been prepared.

On June 8th, Feast of the Sacred Heart, the picture of the Sacred Heart was placed on the stage in the Assembly Hall, anal after Father Weaver had read the Act of Consecration, the whole School went to the Chapel for Benediction. We feel sure that seeing all the Nuns and children assembled in His honour, Our Blessed Lord will indeed bless this House specially consecrated to His Sacred Heart.

During Benediction the Senior Choir sang "Ecce Panis Angelorum", and the whole School joined in singing "Heart of Jesus, bless this place".

Serious work now both for those doing Public Examinations and the rest facing House Tests! There was time, however, to prepare for a Musical Evening, and Mother Potter and Miss Gobell were working at final rehearsals for the Operetta to be produced by the Middle School.

JULY

This month brought with it many very pleasant surprises. One morning the Boarders were interested to see Nuns with white veils in the Chapel. No, they were not Missionaries - but the Novices who had come with Mother d'Alancon. They came to stay at Boscombe for a week and we were delighted to have an opportunity of seeing Sister Catherine Morton and Ita Hancock and chatting with them again. They were as keen and interested as ever in House and School activities. We were pleased to meet the other Novices whom we had not known before, but who also took a great interest in all that was happening in those crowded days towards the end of term.

The juniors gave an entertainment in the garden and we were invited to the Dress Rehearsal. That day we saw other unfamiliar faces among the Nuns and were told that Reverend Mother Fouret and Mother Anne Marie Fevrier had come from La Louviere to visit our English Convents. They came around to all the class rooms as well as attending the Entertainments during those days and we were sorry that they were unable to stay for the end of term.

July 12th was the date fixed for the Musical Evening and parents and friends, who filled the Hall, considered that all the work was of a high standard. The whole programme revealed the hard work of the Music staff and also willing co-operation on the part of the pupils. We very much admired the end part of the programme, in which a group of Past Pupils figured. Pamela Rollin and Sandra Millis were good enough to come and play the violin with the present pupils. Those who were not able to attend may be interested in the items produced.

"The Giant of Tangley Mountain", an Operetta, in which the three Middle School Forms took part, was a great success. The singing was sweet, and the characters entered into the humour of the situations. A most extraordinary princess, dashing young Knights, the Royal Court,Sally Lunn, Robin the caddy, and last but not least the dragon itself, gave us a most enjoyable entertainment and we are sure the parents had equal pleasure on the night of the public performance.

Sports Day was the last social event of the year. Everything went with a swing and the group of seniors who went to help Miss Nugent with the juniors, did their work efficiently. The children enjoyed it all but they all expected a prize in the younger Forms but soon consoled themselves with ices and sweets if they were not fortunate enough to come in the first three. The Senior Sports in the afternoon were again great fun, and the House Captains' race was the most amusing ever.

Term ended with the Distribution of Prizes and this year it was a real happiness for all of us to know that Reverend Mother General would be in Boscombe for the last day of term and that she would present the prizes. We look forward to Reverend Mother General's visits and have been very disappointed when they occurred during holidays.

The singing of the School Song brought another full School year to a close and the inevitable partings, as some must leave their schooldays behind and go out into the world. It is on these occasions that one sees how much their School has meant to the leavers and feel sure that they will "be faithful to our school's traditions" and keep in touch with the Convent in their future.
