16th. a.m. "Hamlet" shown in the School Hall. Everyone admired the superb acting and impressive setting.
The Junior Sports had been arranged for the afternoon, but the Clerk of the Weather was not kind. Undismayed, the little ones began cheerfully; but soon a drizzle set in which showed no inclination to stop. Heavy rain was falling by the end of the afternoon; but the juniors, who had repaired indoors, seemed in no sense dispirited. Reverend Mother General was goad enough to stay for the races and to present the prizes to the excited winners.
17th. Music Competition. A representative group from each House was chosen to play
before Reverend Mother General, Reverend Mother, and the Music Staff. Points were also given for the general standard attained by each pupil in the Term.
The Final Inter-Form Rounders Match between Forms VI and Va was fixed for after lunch. We all knew that Form VI was minus a player, and wondered how they would face the situation. As time drew near for the match to begin, wailing music was heard in the distance. A large black coffin (the sentry box from "Iolanthe" turned to other use! ) was borne on to the pitch while Form VI intoned the `Dead March' on Recorders!
They slowly moved to their respective places, leaving 3rd post unoccupied. Then, wonderful to relate (mirabile dictu), the black object was lowered and the missing member of the team extricated - an excellent dummy, dressed in full uniform, with black rope plaits and an unduly healthy complexion. Whether Form VI won the match mattered little; they had certainly carried the day!
After the Exhibition of Work, many had asked that we should don our various garments for a parade. Mother Potter, with her original ideas, came to our rescue; and we staged young ladies walking on the beach in summer dresses, playing a tennis match in shorts and blouses, tiptoeing off to, bed in night attire with lighted candles. The fun apart, this little episode proved to ourselves and others that the garments were really fit for wear!
18th. a.m. Junior School gave a short programme of Maypole and other dances on the lawn in St. Joseph's. This, together with little pieces learnt at Elocution, and a play by Preparatory Form, gave Mother General and the other Nuns a very happy hour.
Junior Prize Distribution took place in the afternoon.
19th. Senior Prize Distribution. A day of mingled joy and sadness - excitement at the results of the year's work and games, but sadness at the thought that many of the girls who have taken so active a part in all these events must now leave school life behind. They take with them our best wishes and prayers, and, as Reverend Mother General reminded them, they will always be children of the Cross,
We were very favoured indeed in having Reverend Mother General present at so many of our end-of-term functions. We wish to express our appreciation of the time she devoted to us, and to say what an honour it was for us to receive our prizes from her this year.
OCTOBER
The Mass of the Holy Ghost was celebrated by Reverend Father Baron S.J., who again reminded us of the dedication of all our faculties to the service of God.
As the month advanced, numbers diminished, until one began to wonder whether it would become necessary to cancel the Annual Dance.
30th. Form VI attended a performance of 'Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme' at Bournemouth School.
SEPTEMBER
A new School Year! Elections were the first important item, once we had settled into our new classes. The following Monday, at School Assembly, Reverend Mother came to announce the Officers for the year. Before presenting the badges, Reverend Mother welcomed the new girls, spoke of loyalty to Mother Keyes, our Headmistress, to the Seniors voted as Captains, and to the School itself.
This led her on to speak in a most inspiring way of the history of the foundation of the School, the part played by the Religious of the Cross in Catholic Education in Bournemouth, and of the traditions of our Convent. She then presented the Badges to the following:
Head Girl: Clare Habgood.
Games Captain: Sheila Lee.
Games Secretary: Patricia Ryan.
House Captains: Campions: Clare Habgood. Ignatians: Sheila Lee. Stanislausians: Sheena McCappin. Xaverians: Mary Linford.
Prefects: Patricia Lowe, Cecilia Turtle, Jean Waldron, Janine Weeks.
Weekly Record Cards are arousing much interest, and woe betide anyone with a `C' for Conduct.
NOVEMBER
On Friday, November 1st, it was possible to hold our Dance at the Pavilion, and if the numbers were not so, high as usual, each Form managed to produce its set dances.
Prizewinners in the Fancy Dress Parade were
1st: Space Man (Elizabeth Baker).
2nd: Polish National Costume (Joanna Bialobrzeska ).
3rd: Old Woman in the Shoe (Karen Flux).
4th: Christmas Cracker (Barbara Winterford).
5th: Toy Soldier (Christopher Baker).
The `Spot' Prize was won by Anne Spicer and Maureen Hooper.
His Worship the. Mayor (Councillor W. J. Whitelock) and the Mayoress were unable to come until later in the evening. but we were honoured with their presence and pleased that they remained until, the Last Waltz and Auld Lang Syne, which brought a happy event to a close.
November is nearly ended, and preparation for the Christmas Plays and Carols are keeping everyone busy.
A programme of events is included so that those who are unable to be present may have some idea of the end-of-term activities.
