JUNE
Reverend Mother General made a quick tour of the School and we are hoping that next time her stay will be longer, so that she may see more of our activities.
Father J. Forrestall, who came from Manchester to spend a few days in Boscombe, gave several talks to us and showed films of Vocations' Exhibitions and of the Serra Club. On the morning of the death of Our Holy Father, Pope John XXIII,
Father Forrestall offered a Requiem Mass at which the whole school was present.
The Catholic Schools' Fete! Many of us helped at our own parish stalls.
Outdoor procession of the Blessed Sacrament on the Sunday following Corpus Christi.
Feast of the Sacred Heart. Renewal of the Consecration of the House.
News of the election of Cardinal Montini as Sovereign Pontiff, Our Holy Father,
Paul VI. We assembled in the Chapel to sing "God bless our Pope".
JULY
Oxford and School Examinations!
Sports' Day. Races, jumping and P.E. display on the Hockey Pitch. Parents were invited this year and, fortunately, the weather was good.
Gala at Stokewood Baths. Races - submarine swimming - diving - formation swimming! Parents and girls enjoyed every minute of the programme arranged by Mrs. Dane.
"One in Five." Talk to Forms IV, V and VI by Mrs. Russell, W.V.S.
Presentation to Mother Egan on her retirement from the Headship of Holy Cross School. Members of the Education Committee, Managers, parents, past pupils and children of the Holy Cross filled the Convent Hall to show their appreciation of Mother Egan's devoted interest in all who came under her care. Anne-Marie Allum spoke on behalf of the Convent girls who were former pupils of Holy Cross and offered Mother Egan an illuminated Spiritual Bouquet in gratitude for her help and encouragement to them. We join with Mother Egan's many friends in wishing her much happiness in her new work in Manchester.
Bournemouth Music Festival. The two Choirs entered gained Certificates. Congratulations to them, and in particular to Miss Gobell!
SEPTEMBER
Re-opening. Quite a transformation in many parts of the School buildings. St. Michael's dormitory newly painted in light pastel shades, Form VI re-painted, back stairs of the main building bright with washable paper - and the parlours, we scarcely recognised! Reverend Mother certainly does everything in her power to keep the School up-to-date, and visitors as well as pupils admire all that has been achieved.
Presentation of badges by Reverend Mother to: Head Girl - J. Banks; Deputy Head Girl and Senior Prefect - M. Atkins; Games Captain - G. Matterface; Games Secretary - S. Millett;
House Captains - M. Atkins (Campions), M. Hancock (Ignatians), G. Matterface (Stanislausians), A. Allum (Xaverians);
Prefects -A. Baugh, C. Wickham, A. Fisher, M. Baldacchino, K. Darby, D. Hebblethwaite.
Reverend Mother spoke to us of loyalty to our school, and of respect for the standards which it upholds.
OCTOBER
At the beginning of the month we missed the familiar figure of Mr. Vincent Arnold, who had for so many years acted as M.C. at all ceremonies in the Chapel, looked after our games pitches, helped with preparations for our plays, and so often rejoiced the juniors' hearts by coveted rides round the garden in his `car'. We wish him happiness and health in his retirement.
Annual School Dance. Another lively reunion of parents, Staff, past and present pupils. We were pleased that Father Enright and so many of the local clergy were able to accept our invitation. The Fancy Dress prizes were awarded to: lst - Mummy and Daddy (T. Druitt and G. Woods); 2nd - Space Cat (R. Tanner); 3rd - Decimal Coinage (S. Smith); 4th - Snakes and Ladders (L. Maude).
"Barbarino", an Opera adapted from "Figaro", music by Mozart, was performed by Forms V and VI, directed by Miss Gobell and Miss Dunsdon, with Miss Oswell as violin accompanist; and "The House Fairy" (Laurence Housman), produced by Sister Claire. Singing and acting received many compliments from the audience, and special mention must be made of the effective scenery for the Opera, constructed and painted by A. Allum, T. Brooks and A. Fisher. Scenery for "The House Fairy" was made in the Art Classes - so the whole production was a School effort. Proceeds were in aid of Oxfam.
NOVEMBER
Party of Form VI to see "Cyrano de Bergerac" at Talbot Heath School.
Teams to take part in Bournemouth Schools' Swimming Gala.
As we go to press, we record the events planned for the rest of the term:
Retreat for Seniors - to be given by Father J. Forrestall.
Speech Day and Distribution of Prizes.
Two lectures with slides on "Colour", by Mr. P. Hypher (father of Anne and Margaret).
Carols, on the last Sunday of term.
Knitting for the orphans-class plays
Christmas cake display - all the traditional end-of-term activities!
