Of course, there have been introductions
to the new babies! Rita Donohue (Allum)
and Karen (Flux) brought their
babies one afternoon. It was like old times
to see Rita and Karen together on the school
premises. Genevieve Dando (Claxton)
brought her little son when she was staying
in Bournemouth.
We are looking forward
to meeting the first daughter of the Browning
family (Tommy and Anna Murray). Monica
Hyland (Hughes), back in England on
leave, was anxious to take her three little
daughters for a tour of Mummy's school.
Our photo shows Rosemary Griffiths with her bridesmaids, Angela and Christina -daughters of Eileen Griffiths (Davies).
Angela Malfatti (Rickard) also came to explore the old haunts, while spending a holi
day in the district. Angela's father died
some months ago. We shall not forget to
pray for him, as also for Deirdre Foster's
mother, who died in Australia.
Mrs. Rita Browning, President of the Concrozians, Mrs. Tucker (Hobbs) and Mrs. Lewis Manning (Lloyd) were with us on the day we celebrated Mother Howe's Jubilee. Irene Dunnett is now living at our Convent in Angmering. She has recently undergone an operation on her eyes to see whether any relief can be given to her failing sight.
She is very happy in the peaceful surroundings of Syon House. Sister Mary John (Pannell) and Sister Imelda send us news of Miss Dunnett and they usually receive a visit from Miss Gobell at half-term. Miss Gobell corresponds regularly with Ines Conrad (Lucantoni), who is now settled in South Africa.
On the occasion of matches arranged between present and past pupils, it is good to see many Concrozians turning out to support the teams. Sheila Murray (McFadden) is always a liaison with many former pupils as she meets them at the Youth Club of which she and her husband are enthusiastic leaders.
In July, everyone connected with the school was sad to say `Good-bye' to Margot Conway (Jones) and her family, who have emigrated to U.S.A. - Wisconsin. Some of the Staff, including Jean Walsh (Hughes), managed to get permits to board the Queen Elizabeth and to see the Conways installed
in their cabins. Margot has since written several times, describing their new life vividly and giving us an insight into the American system of education. Marjorie Wood devotes herself tirelessly to assisting the Concrozians in every way - as she is similarly ever-ready for any project in the school.
Lorna Arscott (Shadwell) stayed with Marjorie a short time ago and came to visit the Convent here and also to Springhill, where she wished to see Sister Maria Gertrud (Sohle). As we go to print we hear that Sister Margaret Welstead (now at Springhill) has received the Last Rites of the Church. We ask your prayers for her, and also for Reverend Mother Marcelle Serusier, former Reverend Mother General of the Congregation, who died on October 17th.
Many past pupils will remember her first visit to Boscombe after the last war, and the lively interest she took in all school activities, in particular dramatic and musical productions. She would often inquire about a girl who had taken such and such a part in a play, and we were amazed that she should remember individuals in one school when her office entailed so many contacts in various places in England and abroad.
The Congregation sustained another loss in the death of Sister Anne McGarry, who courageously carried out her duties as cook at Springhill until a few weeks before her death. May they rest in peace.
There are frequent requests to know the whereabouts of other Nuns who are past pupils or were long connected with Boscombe. Sister Katarina Johnson, whom many remember when she looked after the Boarders here, left England in August to work at our Mission at Mbanga in the Cameroons. Sister Brigid is also there and last term she appealed to us for cookery overalls for her pupils - a request to which the school readily responded.
Sister Marguerite Coward has replaced Sister Katarina at Holy Cross School, Springhill, having left the North during the summer holidays. Sister Claire Potter has done the reverse, leaving "beautiful Bournemouth" for "misty Manchester". She has as a companion there, Sister Mary Agnes Loftus, who is teaching at St. Hugh's Junior School.
Mother Helen is now resident at Oaklands ( Waterlooville) since August, but she comes to Boscombe for any special events, and as Mother Vicar she is still one of the Board of Governors. Mother Helen's visits are often the opportunity for us to see Sister Patricia McLoughlin, who acts as chauffeuse.
Mother McEvoy is also at Oaklands and is always interested in her pupils of former years at Boscombe. Sister Mary Joseph (Briggs) is another member of the Oaklands Community. We offer her our sympathy on the death of her sister Mildred after long and painful suffering which she bore most courageously.
Sister Catherine Morton has brought teams from Oaklands to Boscombe during the year - she was also to bring some of the girls to the Final Profession of Sister Margaret Gibbons on September 15th. The person who has a wonderful memory for faces and names is Sister Mechtilde, still portress at Boscombe.
Girls who come back after many years always ask for her and do not feel that things are right if anyone else lets them in. The varied versions of her name are most amusing, but we know who is meant when the title is Sister Magtail (date of Canonisation - unknown!).
Former pupils who have entered other Religious Congregations keep in touch with us very faithfully. Sister Mary Bernadette (Cecilia Turtle) and Sister Imelda (Veronica Turtle) write cheerful letters full of enthusiasm for the work they are doing. Cecilia is now at the Loretto Convent, Nottingham, Veronica in the Novitiate at Llandudno. Sister Mary Godric (Kitty Coombes) is in hospital at present, but she sent a letter this week saying that she is really beginning to feel better.
Sister Mary Clare (Jennifer Coambes) never forgets the Feast of the Cross, and from her letters one can gather that life in a Poor Clare Convent involves plenty of active work as well as contemplation. We have not heard recently from Margaret Collins (name in Religion not known), but Monica Hyland told us how very happy Margaret was in her new life.
Marie Madeleine Daneels came to see Sister Angela Gillard some weeks ago. She was staying with Joan Harrison (Hackett) until Joan's wedding. We are sorry to know that Joan has since been seriously ill and we wish her a complete and speedy recovery. Dorothy Hebblethwaite was received into the Church this year and has let us know of her forthcoming marriage at the Catholic Church, Wimborne, in December.
Carol Meier (Wickham) was married in Switzerland last July and Mary Hancock was present at the wedding. Shuna Boyd, now following a Secretarial Course in London, has written recently giving a graphic description of her daily routine. Tessa Hamblin, a young past pupil, sent us her G.C.E. results - we are pleased to hear that she is continuing with Sixth Form work.
Mrs. Mary Walsh, formerly P.E. Mistress, gave us a surprise visit recently and recalled many of the amusing episodes connected with plays of the good old days, with Sister Clare (Potter) taking everyone's part, and Mrs. (then Miss) Walsh, being athletic, was expected to control the "noises off", lead the shouts of "No room" on the ground floor and be ready to take up the echo on the first floor!
Miss Stafford when writing asked for news of Miss Cummings and Mrs. Walsh - she said that some of the Boscombe girls of her day still send her greetings at Christmas. She mentioned in particular Joy Winterbottam. Joy is French Mistress at Winchester Grammar School and when she comes to the Convent it inevitably happens that Sister Ruth Mary (Brown), her contemporary, is away.
Margaret Mary Manning (Brown) was in Bournemouth with her family during the summer and she was able to give news of Barbara Kell, who is working in London. Cynthia Eveleigh-Smith is a most faithful caller whenever she gets a few days' holiday from her nursing training. During the holidays we are always pleased to chat with the groups of University and College students who make a rendezvous at the Convent.
Among the "regulars" are Gill Spencer, Fiona Lake, Josephine Dool, Anne Gryce, Anne Lewis, Angela Hutchings, Susan Newman, Veronica Peet, Rosemary Darley and Diana Hauser.
