Day Twelve - onto Burgos
Day 12
Today, the pilgrim travels from St. Juan to Burgos. We start off along an interesting path through oak and pine woods that drop down to the peaceful valley of the rio Vena before ascending the lonely Sierra Atapuerca.

From here we descend again to Obaneja village. This makes up almost 50% of today's stage but we prepare for the hard slog into, and through Burgos (the main albergue is the far side of the city).

After the quiet of San Juan de Ortega we are prepared for the blast of this historic but hectic city. There are a several options entering the city itself.

The days' journey is over 27 kms or nearly 17 miles. Below are a few of the sites Bro. William encountered on the journey.
Day 12
Burgos City - While warning of the vagaries of city life, we must also emphasise the beauty of many of the city's buildings and their artifacts.

Burgos is a veritable architectural jewel and full of monuments worthy of exploration and appreciation.

Sometimes referred to as the Gothic capital of Spain, it was in fact the seat of Franco's Government until 1938, an indication of its nationalist and establishment leanings.

A burgeoning population approaching 200,000 seems unable to shake off its austere religious and political image.

It is, after all, named after its heavy defensive town towers (burgos) and was home to the warlord El Cid.

The week either side of 29th June is the city's main festival of San Pedro y Pablo. Accommodation at this time is doubly difficult to secure at double the price.
