Day Thirteen -
onto Hornillos
|
|
Today, Bro. William travels from Burgos to Hornillos.
We leave behind the built-up environment and enter the relative wilderness of the sublime Meseta. Two thirds of the path is by way of an earth track across the peace and quiet of the endless crop fields - wheat on the better ground and barley and oats on the higher and poorer soil.
We might come across a shepherd and his flock or the occasional fox, otherwise we will have the birds to keep uscompany (including cranes - see the picture below).
There is little or no shade on the meseta, so we need to protect our body from the relentless rays of the sun.

If we plan to stay in Hornillos del Camino we might buy food supplies in Tarjados. Hornillos has few facilities although a travelling shop may call. It's all a welcome respite from the conspicuous consumerism of Burgos - and there is a bar in the main street.
To reach Hornillos, Bro. William will journey nearly 19 kms, or 12 miles. The path travels via Villalbilla across the rio Arfanzon, towards Tarjados village, onto Calzados, upto the highest point at Alto Meseta (950m) and finally, Hornillos del Camino.
