Day Sixteen -
onto Carrion
|
|
Today, Bro. William travels from Fromista to Carrion.
The 20km journey - 12 miles - takes us through the villages of Poblacion de Campos with its church - Emita de San Miqul.
Then we have a choice, we can follow the rio (river) Ucieza
onto Villovieco and view the church of the Virgen del Rio and later linking up at Villasirga - or we can follow the road from Poblacion de Campos directly to Villasirga.

Our final destination - CARRION DE LOS CONDES - occupies a strategic position in this volatile border area and at the height of its influence had a population in excess of 10,000; now reduced to some 2,500.
This interesting town retains a medieval atmosphere within its meandering side streets.
It was effectively the capital of much of the tierra de cameos area and ruled by the Leonese Beni-Gomez family, the Counts of Carrion, several of whom met a premature death at the hands of the equally pugnacious El Cid, after they reputedly, and very unwisely, mistreated his daughters.
These intrigues and disputes were not limited to this medieval period. The Church of Santiago was destroyed during the War of Independence (1809) but thankfully leaving the magnificent facade and frieze intact (Christ in majesty) as a national monument. The town has a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
