Day Three -
onto Cizur Menor
|
From the medieval bridge in Larrasoana, the path climbs up through Akerreta and then gently downhill through open country to rejoin the river Arga before crossing into the first village of Zuriain.
The onward journey to the village at the end of day three is Cizur Menor - a journey of 21 kms or 13 miles.
By the end of the day, Bro. William will have travelled through the villages of Zabaldika, Trinidad de Arre and Pamplona before reaching the final destination of Cizor menor.
Zuriain - Here we join the N-135 for [0.6 km] turning off left (Illurdotz).
The journey re-crosses the river Arga and continues right between group of houses (dogs) and abandoned quarry buildings for [2.1 km] climbing up along a narrow quarry path overlooking the Arga valley.
|
The path drops down again through the hamlet of Iroz and across the river again over a medieval bridge turning left along the river bank to:
Zabaldika - We take the track that bypasses this tiny hamlet and cross over the N-135 continuing along the old road (now bypassed) for 0.2 km and turn off right by picnic site with toilets.
We continue up a steep track that skirts the hill above Monte Narval for 2.3 km entering an underpass that avoids the busy ring road N-121A.
From here we climb around the side of the hill Monte Miravalles with pine plantation in front of us for 1.1 km to join a disused road that drops down to the magnificent medieval bridge at Villava over the rio Ulzama (tributary of the Araa) just above a large weir. Here we enter the suburbs of Pamplona at:
|
Trinidad de Arre - Albergue parish hostel is located behind the Convento de la Trinidad (Basilica church) immediately adjoining the bridge. There has been a pilgrim hospital here since the "ll" century!
Open all year with 36 beds (3 rooms) and all "facilities* in this quiet location adjoining the river. There are shops and restaurants close by in the suburb of Villava.
Cizur Menor - appears as an affluent dormitory town of Pamplona. It was formerly a commanderq of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and also provided a pilgrim hospice dedicated to Our Lady of Forgiveness Nuestra Seizoru del Perd6rr, who was, and remains, much venerated in this area.
Occupying an elevated site is the 12" century Romanesque church dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael Iglesia de San Miguel Archangel. There are several bars, a restaurant and a chemist.
Bro. Williams' thoughts of today - spending time on your own while walking can help you reflect about your life and where you are going.
