Sunday Refreshments
available after the 10 am Mass, provided by a rota of generous volunteers. - a good opportunity for children to have a drink and a brief play with their friends while the grown-ups enjoy a cuppa and a chat - The Parish Priest comes in too.

On my own behalf and on behalf of those who receive the Lord in the Eucharist at home and in church, thank you for distributing Holy Communion to them. By the service that you give you become the bread of life for those you serve both at home and in the church. Christ is with you in the sacrament of Holy Communion and in you who distribute holy Communion both to those in Church and to those who are housebound.

It is the Lord whom you carry both in the pyx and in your heart.

At the meeting held on Wednesday evening 9 July at 6pm in the Sacristy it was discussed and agreed that due to the falling number of Ministers (we'll have a push for more after the holidays) that:

At 10am mass on Sundays we'll have only two Ministers at the altar with the priest: both these ministers will take 1 chalice each and after receiving the Lord in Holy Communion go to stand as close as possible in front of the open sacristy door on the 1 side and the emergency door on the other side, as happens at 6pm on Saturdays - the priest alone will distribute the hosts in the centre. Start on 20 July.

The list of those on the housebound list, to whom Holy Communion is taken, will be divided into 2 so that each half will receive Holy Communion every other Sunday (not every Sunday). Start on 20 July

With these alterations Ministers will only be called upon to distribute Holy Communion at mass 1 in 6 Sundays and similarly go out to the housebound 1 in every 6 weeks.

Hopefully this will reduce the pressure on Ministers and their families on Sundays. When we have more Ministers then we can maintain the arrangements at mass and increase the frequency to the housebound without putting more demands on the existing Ministers and any future Ministers.

Thank you again for your willing love and service of Christ in his Church, our Church faith family.

Remember me loving you. Fr Shaun

To all People who are housebound and to whom Holy Communion is taken on Sundays 9 July 2008

Thank you for the privilege of allowing members of our Parish Family into your homes to bring you the Lord in the sacrament of Holy Communion. All Ministers find it a great joy to be with you. They all speak of the experience of God's blessings while with you.

It is with sadness that I share the following adjustments with you due to circumstances beyond our control. We ask for your special prayers as we try to do what God wants both for you and for the Ministers and their families.

Over many months of some of our Ministers have moved house and therefore away: some Ministers have sick members in their own families: and the needs of some Ministers to their own families has to figure in the time that can be offered.

These factors have lead to a drop in the number of Ministers.

In the light of this drop in numbers of Ministers and in order to support those who remain as Ministers and their families we are only going to be able to come to you every other Sunday with the Lord in Holy Communion.

This will come into effect on Sunday 20 July.

At this time a rota is being drawn up and we will let you know within the next few days what Sunday a Minister will come to bring you the Lord in Holy Communion.

Please let us pray for one another

Remember me loving you. Fr Shaun

Fr Austin Budworth SJ died peacefully last Thursday, aged 89. May he rest in peace.

As many will know, Fr Bud was at Corpus Christi church from 1977 till he had to go into nursing care with dementia four years ago.

His body will be received into Corpus Christi church on Wednesday evening at 6pm. There will be Evening Prayer of the Dead with the Jesuit Community, followed by Mass at 6.15pm. All are welcome to attend.

His Requiem Mass will be at 12 noon on Thursday. Again, all are more than welcome to attend, and to share refreshments afterwards in our Parish Centre.

Please note that on Thursday this week there will be NO MASS AT 10AM in Corpus Christi church. Mass will be at 7.15am and 12 noon.

Dear Sisters and Brothers we need more Ministers Please will you become a Minister of the Eucharist once every 6 weeks?

Training will be given. If you feel you could help, please contact me.

Fr Shaun. Thanks.

News from the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC)

Recently we have had two members of the PPC stand down. Linda Cunniffe and Lorraine Holloway have both been valuable members of the PPC and given the parish their service as members over a number of years and for some of that time Lorraine was also the PPC secretary. They have decided to step down for a while, I know they will both remain valued and committed members of our community.

I, and the rest of the PPC, would like to thank Linda and Lorraine on behalf of the whole Parish for their time and effort over their periods of tenure. Thank you both.

It is healthy that the membership of the PPC is able to rotate over a three to four year cycle, in this way new ideas and initiatives can be introduced. It can be frustrating to be part of a community such as our Parish and not to have a say in how things are run on your behalf. If you feel like this and would like to consider contributing some of your time to the good of the Parish, speak to one of the PPC members to find out what is involved.

At this moment in time the Parish needs all the help and support that it can get, we need your new ideas & initiatives.

Mark Hawkins, on behalf of the PPC

PUT THE FUN INTO FUND RAISING!

At the recent PPC meeting, when the Parish finances were discussed, it was suggested that we put on some fund raising events. Many people were keen to have a Christmas Bazaar and a Summer Fete. We have a volunteer to start the 100 Club in September. A number of people are willing to help organise these events.

If you are interested in getting involved, watch out for details in the newsletter over the next few months. Please start making jam for the produce stall and save your new paperbacks for the book stall! Good quality bric a brac is always wanted. Irene Cradick, on behalf of the PPC

MAINTENANCE NEWS

Last Wednesday, with this heavy Summer rain, there was a severe leak in the roof over the sacristy with water coming in onto the table and floor in the right hand corner.

Also in the Parish Office, due to nature of the flat roof, water has come in over the desk and computer equipment, which had to be covered with a tarpaulin - not a good mixture electricity and water over the office equipment. Both roofs will require examination and the necessary repairs to be carried out & these will add cost to our outgoings.

Two weeks ago youngsters forced open the back gate at the right-hand side of the church to gain access to the rear of the church. Last year we made many necessary security updates, with the advice of the Police and the help of Michael Lanham, and security remains an important but costly ongoing issue.

FOREIGN MISSION APPEAL for MEDICAL MISSIONARIES OF MARY

Last weekend we raised £ 329.70 (inc a £50 cheque) for Sister Maura. This money will go to support the missionary work of all the women religious in England and Wales. Thank you for your generous donations .

FINANCE UPDATE (3rd inclusion)

Fr Shaun, the Spirit, Finance and Property Group (SFPG) and the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) thank everybody who has responded to our recent appeal to increase the weekly offerings.

However, the general situation remains serious. Our net average weekly offertory collection over the past nine months since September 2007, stands at £510 pw. The net weekly average of expenditure over the same period stands at £889 - a weekly deficit of £379.

This position cannot be sustained for more than a few months. To put some context to the expenditure, the diocesan Levy and loan repayments for the Reordering of the Church (outstanding balance £6,000+) alone amount to £352 per week. These are costs which we can do nothing about.

All the remaining expenditure relates to the upkeep and running of the church premises and presbytery, the basic living costs for our priest (who takes no salary despite his entitlement) and other essential costs relating to the efficient running of an average size Catholic parish with a regular congregation of between 200 - 250.

In the short term the quickest way to address the situation is to attempt to raise the weekly shortfall from offertory collections. This would mean an average increase of £2 per adult parishioner. (in reality a cost of dozen eggs, box of PG tips, 1/2 a leisure magazine, can of Guinness).

Tackling expenditure would take longer than the amount of time we may in fact have.

These issues will be raised again in an address at weekend masses in the near future. In the meantime please consider:

regularly using planned giving envelopes
(great system but sometimes not easy to find the money on the day or remember to bring it)

starting or increasing a standing order
(this is a very simple way to give regularly and easy to manage - forms on freetable in porch)

signing a gift aid declaration if you are a UK taxpayer
(honestly, the government do give us 28p for every £1 you donate but not if it goes into loose plate)

The harshness of the facts underline that all of us need to share this responsibility if we want to keep our parish running. Our parish allows us to share with our community the Sacraments and the love we have for Our Lord - our giving allows this to happen. It allows the doors to be opened."

SFPG - Stephen Ferris, Julia Marsh, Louise Metcalfe, Fr Shaun.
Sandra Cook attends as Parish Administrator.

SERVING MASS

If you have made your First Communion and come to Mass regularly, why not be trained to SERVE MASS.

You would learn all that you have to do.

When fully trained, your name will go on a special rota list of servers. If you keep up a good standard of serving for a year, you would be enrolled as a member of the Guild of St Stephen, and be entitled to wear the Guild medal.

Talk to the Parish Priest TODAY.
